Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Early-stage researchers from eligible Global South countries who have already established a productive relationship with a Ghent University professor and a local supervisor
- Doctoral candidates whose proposed research directly tackles South-North developmental, environmental, or scientific challenges with tangible local relevance
- Scholars whose home institutions have the capacity and willingness to formally guarantee 24 months of continuous, full-time salary or scholarship co-funding
What should you think carefully about?
- Ghent University funds only the 24 months spent in Ghent; securing verified institutional co-funding for the remaining 24 months in the South is mandatory for eligibility
- Strict international mobility rules apply, requiring long-term physical relocations between Ghent and the home institution across the four-year doctoral timeline
- Each Ghent University supervisor can support at most two applicants across different genders, making early contact and mutual commitment essential
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This scheme is well-matched for researchers aiming to earn a European doctoral degree without breaking institutional and community ties in their home country. Because the sandwich format splits time evenly between Belgium and the Global South, it offers substantial international laboratory and library access alongside direct in-country fieldwork, building long-term academic partnerships that advance both local capacity and international collaboration.
Our take
This opportunity is ideal for early-career scholars from qualifying Global South countries with strong institutional backing at home and an agreed Ghent supervisor. Candidates unable to secure written financial guarantees from their home institution for the 24 months of local research should prioritize fully funded programs elsewhere.
