About the opportunity

The Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Bioinformatics/Systems Biology to join the Systems Pharmacology research group. Funded by the Research Council of Finland project “EpiTheraRx: Harnessing Epitranscriptomic Regulation of Alternative Splicing for RNA Therapeutics Innovation,” the role focuses on developing computational approaches to identify disease-relevant alternative splicing events and their epitranscriptomic regulation. The researcher will analyze large-scale single-cell and bulk multi-omics datasets, integrate genomics, epitranscriptomics, and transcriptomics data, and contribute to the development of novel systems biology and bioinformatics methods for RNA therapeutic target discovery. The position is a fixed-term role until August 31, 2030, starting in January 2027.

Salary and benefits

  • Starting gross salary typically around 2,500 – 2,700 EUR per month, increasing gradually as PhD work progresses.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • MSc graduates in bioinformatics, systems biology, or related fields with strong programming skills in R or Python.
  • Researchers with experience in analyzing multi-omics data who are interested in RNA therapeutics.
  • Individuals who thrive in an international, interdisciplinary research environment and are eager to publish in peer-reviewed journals.

What should you think carefully about?

  • This is a long-term, fixed-term position until 2030, requiring a significant commitment to the doctoral program.
  • The role is on-site in Helsinki, necessitating relocation to Finland.
  • Candidates must ensure they meet the criteria for admission to the University of Helsinki's doctoral program within the first six months.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This position is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring scientist to conduct high-impact research in a growing field. It provides the necessary supervision, funding, and network to complete a PhD and establish a career in systems pharmacology or bioinformatics.

Our take

This is a highly attractive role for a motivated researcher looking to specialize in RNA therapeutics. Those who are not prepared for a multi-year doctoral commitment or who prefer a different research focus may find it less suitable.
