About the opportunity
The University of Helsinki is seeking a Doctoral Researcher for the VODBIO project (Vegetation Optical Depth as Biophysical Proxy: Retrieval, Validation, and Applications). The successful candidate will develop a physically based framework for interpreting satellite microwave vegetation optical depth (VOD) as an indicator of vegetation water content, biomass, and forest structure. This involves generating realistic 3D representations of trees and forest stands using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and quantitative structure modelling (QSM), linking these structures to satellite-observed signals. The researcher will work within the Department of Geosciences and Geography, collaborating with an interdisciplinary consortium including the Finnish Meteorological Institute and Aalto University.
Salary and benefits
- Starting salary of approximately 2,700–2,900 euros per month.
- Occupational health care and other social benefits.
- Support for internationally recruited employees with their transition to living and working in Finland.
- Access to a world-class academic community promoting diversity, international engagement, and equality.
Who can apply?
- Strong interest in remote sensing, forest structure, ecological modelling, or geospatial data science.
- Suitable background in geography, forest sciences, ecology, environmental sciences, geoinformatics, physics, computer science, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills (e.g., in Python or R).
- Must have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or obtain it within the six-month probationary period.
- Experience with point cloud processing, terrestrial or airborne laser scanning, quantitative structure models, GIS, or forest inventory is considered an advantage.
Required documents
- Freeform CV highlighting relevant experience.
- Motivation letter (maximum 2 pages) explaining the desire to pursue doctoral studies.
When to apply
- Deadline: August 31, 2026, at 23:59 EEST (UTC + 3).
