About the opportunity
The University of Twente, Faculty ITC, is seeking a Doctoral Candidate to work on the ITEM (Infrastructure Twente for Ecosystem Monitoring) initiative. The role involves developing an open, explainable, and GeoAI-supported framework for the temporal integration of Earth system models with observational data from a spatially distributed sensor network and Earth observation imagery to model environmental processes like air quality, heat, or drought across various land cover types and scales. The successful candidate will conduct research, publish results in scientific outlets, present at conferences, and contribute to teaching and mentoring MSc students.
Salary and benefits

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- MSc graduates in math, physics, climatology, or physical geography.
- Candidates experienced in GeoAI, radiative transfer modeling, or data-driven machine learning.
- Individuals proficient in C, C++, or Python for geodata analysis.
What should you think carefully about?
- The position is strictly on-site in Enschede, necessitating relocation if the candidate is not already local.
- The role includes teaching and mentoring responsibilities, which may be a significant time commitment alongside research.
- Candidates should be prepared for a 6-9 month qualifier period to confirm their candidacy.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This doctoral position is a prime opportunity for someone looking to specialize in the intersection of GeoAI and Earth system modeling. It provides the resources and academic environment necessary to produce high-impact research while gaining valuable experience in teaching and scientific publishing.
Our take
This is a compelling role for researchers interested in the temporal integration of environmental data; those seeking remote work or a purely research-focused role without teaching duties may find it less suitable.
