About the opportunity

The Asian Cultural Council (ACC) advances international dialogue, understanding, and respect through immersive cultural exchange activities between the United States and Asia, as well as within Asia. For the 2027 cycle, ACC offers four distinct funding streams: the New York Fellowship (a 6-month immersive residency in New York City for arts practitioners from Asia), the Individual Fellowship (1 to 6 months of self-directed research and cross-cultural exploration across eligible destinations for individuals or joint teams of up to three), the Graduate Fellowship ($15,000 per academic year for Asian graduate students studying in the U.S. in underrepresented arts disciplines), and the Organization Grant (supporting non-profit arts institutions to facilitate 1 to 6 months of exchange travel or hosting). ACC supports non-production cultural immersion free from commercial or production output pressures.

Funding and benefits

  • New York Fellowship: Provides a $38,000 award for a six-month stay, including a $3,000 pre-arrival advance for travel and visa costs, J-1 visa sponsorship, SEVIS fee payment ($220), mandatory travel health insurance ($675 to $800), optional housing at International House (I-House) in New York City, and between $10,000 and $31,100 in living stipends depending on chosen housing arrangements.
  • Individual Fellowship: Provides up to $35,000 for one to six months of self-directed exploration and cultural immersion, covering economy airfare, ground transportation, accommodation, daily living expenses, J-1 visa fees (for U.S. travel), and travel health insurance.
  • Graduate Fellowship: Provides $15,000 per academic year to assist with travel and living expenses during the full-time coursework phase in the U.S., with the possibility of renewal for a second academic year.
  • Organization Grant: Provides up to $50,000 to cover economy airfare, ground transport, lodging, meals, daily expenses, travel health insurance, interpretation, and activity costs for organizational travel or hosting.
  • Access to ACC's global alumni network, programmatic advising, institutional introductions, and cohort events.

  • Grantees traveling to Asia are responsible for obtaining their own entry visas and must hold comprehensive travel health insurance covering at least $100,000 in medical costs, $50,000 in evacuation, and $25,000 in repatriation.
  • Proposals that allocate extended, continuous time in a single cultural context (ideally two or more months) are substantially more competitive than multi-country itineraries.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Mid-career or established cultural practitioners with at least 5 years of professional practice who seek immersion, intellectual renewal, and cross-border research without the pressure to produce a tangible product.
  • Asian graduate students entering or enrolled in full-time U.S. coursework in arts disciplines that lack equivalent degree offerings in their home region.
  • Arts organizations seeking to cultivate bilateral exchange partnerships or host Asian/U.S. collaborators for collaborative learning.

What should you think carefully about?

  • ACC explicitly excludes production-focused projects, meaning any proposal designed to write a book, shoot a film, stage an exhibition, or rehearse for an upcoming show will be rejected during initial screening.
  • The New York and U.S. Individual Fellowship tracks mandate strict compliance with J-1 exchange visitor rules, prohibiting outside earned income and requiring participants to take a formal leave from ongoing employment or studies.
  • Applicants must commit to substantial travel durations (at least 30 consecutive days in the U.S. or 30 days total in Asia), with the review committee giving strong preference to extended residencies of two months or longer in a single location.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This opportunity is ideally structured for creative professionals and scholars who need an intentional pause to expand their cultural frameworks, build peer networks, or explore archival and community contexts across Asia and the United States. It also serves as an essential bridge for graduate students needing financial maintenance during full-time coursework in specialized U.S. arts programs.

Our take

Apply if you are an eligible arts practitioner, scholar, or organization seeking immersive cultural exchange and can step away from regular work to engage deeply abroad without commercial production commitments. Those seeking funding for specific project outputs, equipment purchases, or short conference travel should look elsewhere.
