About the opportunity

The 2nd Joint ICTP-CCG Catalyst Facility Academic Writing Residency for Global South Scholars supports researchers from developing countries in completing a nearly finished academic paper. Taking place from March 1 to March 19, 2027, at the ICTP in Trieste, Italy, the residency provides dedicated writing time, resources, and in-person mentorship from the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) Consortium. The program focuses exclusively on writing and publication rather than conducting new research; participants must already have a completed draft research paper with all analysis finished. Topics span energy systems, sustainable transport, infrastructure resilience, critical minerals, climate finance, governance, data-to-deal, and related interdisciplinary themes. Residents are expected to produce a pre-print and submit their paper to a peer-reviewed journal during their stay.

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Researchers from ODA-eligible countries who already have a finalized data analysis and a complete draft paper ready for polishing and submission.
  • Scholars working on energy transitions, climate finance, sustainable transport, and related green growth themes aligned with CCG priorities.
  • Academics seeking dedicated writing time away from teaching duties combined with direct mentorship from international experts.

What should you think carefully about?

  • Applicants must already have their research and data analysis fully completed, as the program is strictly dedicated to writing and publication rather than conducting research.
  • Requires a three-week commitment for on-site participation in Trieste, Italy, during March 2027.
  • Eligibility is strictly restricted to nationals and institutional affiliates of ODA-eligible developing countries.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This residency is ideal for early-career or established researchers in the Global South aiming to overcome writing bottlenecks, receive expert mentorship, and successfully push an existing manuscript into a pre-print and peer-reviewed publication.

Our take

Researchers from ODA-eligible countries with a nearly finished manuscript on climate-compatible growth and the flexibility to travel to Italy for three weeks should strongly consider applying before November 15, 2026. Those still in the data collection or analysis phase will find the program unsuitable.
