About the opportunity

The Quantum Hub at the University of Southern Denmark is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year post to conduct research on abstractions for quantum software. As quantum computing advances towards large-scale fault-tolerant devices, robust hardware-independent software abstractions are becoming increasingly important for bridging the gap between quantum algorithms and physical implementations. The position is situated at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Science, on the international campus in Odense. The SDU Quantum Hub is established to create a highly international and interdisciplinary group within a broad spectrum of quantum research, offering an open Scandinavian culture and affordable living costs.

Salary and benefits

  • Employment in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
  • Competitive salary determined by collective agreement based on objective and gender-neutral criteria
  • Optional researcher taxation scheme available for non-Danish candidates
  • Opportunity to work in an international and interdisciplinary research environment

Who can apply?

  • Must hold a PhD degree in mathematics, physics, or computer science
  • Strong motivation to contribute to quantum software research with expertise in relevant areas such as quantum algorithms, quantum circuit synthesis, error correction, or programming languages

Required documents

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications
  • Certificates and Diplomas for MSc and PhD degrees in Danish or English
  • Research Statement
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation submitted by referees before the deadline

When to apply

  • Application deadline is 15 November 2026
  • Targeted starting date is 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Hold a recent PhD in mathematics, physics, or computer science with a specialized focus on quantum computing, algorithms, or software engineering.
  • Wish to build an academic profile within a rapidly growing, international, and interdisciplinary quantum research hub in Europe.
  • Bring expertise in quantum compilation, programming abstractions, error correction, or LLM-assisted quantum programming.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The position is fixed-term for a duration of two years.
  • You must coordinate with your referees to ensure recommendation letters reach the university before the strict application deadline.
  • Relocation to Odense, Denmark is required as the position is based on-site at the SDU campus.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This two-year postdoctoral position provides an excellent platform for early-career researchers looking to establish a strong publication record and deep technical expertise in quantum software abstractions. It suits researchers aiming to bridge theoretical quantum algorithms and practical developer tools within a supportive academic environment before advancing to senior academic or industry R&D roles.

Our take

Early-career researchers with a PhD in mathematics, physics, or computer science and a background in quantum software should seriously consider applying. Candidates unable to relocate to Denmark or secure recommendation letters by the November deadline will find this role unsuitable.
