About the opportunity

The Iliad Fellowship is a 3-month, full-time mentored research program in applied mathematics for AI alignment. Designed primarily for PhD or postdoctoral researchers looking to transition into or advance in technical AI safety research, fellows work in-person in London or the SF Bay Area paired with established mentors. The primary goal is to conduct mathematical research building on existing expertise and produce a fleshed-out research proposal. At the conclusion of the fellowship, Iliad supports fellows in applying for external grant funding for 6 to 24 months of continued research or transitioning into professional AI alignment research roles.

Funding and benefits

  • $6,000 (USD) monthly travel-and-housing allowance
  • Direct mentorship from established researchers in mathematics and AI alignment
  • Guidance on submitting research proposals to major grantmakers (such as Coefficient Giving, Survival and Flourishing Fund, Schmidt Sciences, and UK AISI) to secure 6–24 months of independent funding
  • Career advisory and placement support into AI alignment research positions
  • Tailored scope and compensation for candidates with advanced research experience

Who can apply?

  • PhD or postdoctoral researchers in mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical computer science, or related fields
  • Candidates with equivalent substantial prior research experience regardless of formal credentials
  • Applicants capable of largely self-directed research aiming to transition into or continue applied mathematical AI alignment research
  • Open to researchers from any location willing to attend in person

Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • PhD or postdoctoral researchers in mathematics, theoretical physics, or computer science.
  • Researchers capable of self-directed work who are interested in AI alignment.

What should you think carefully about?

  • The fellowship requires full-time, in-person attendance in either London or the SF Bay Area.
  • You should verify your ability to relocate or commute to these specific hubs for the 3-month duration.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This fellowship is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and professional AI safety work. It is a strategic move for researchers aiming to secure long-term grant funding or transition into specialized roles within the AI alignment field.

Our take

Advanced researchers looking to pivot into AI safety should apply. It is less suitable for those unable to work on-site in London or the SF Bay Area or those not interested in mathematical approaches to AI alignment.
