About the opportunity
This 2-year postdoctoral position is a part of BRIGHT’s mission-oriented Microbial Food research programme (‘Mission 2’), which aims to build an AI-powered framework for the rational design of microbial foods. The project develops a state-of-the-art imaging platform to directly visualize fungal growth in solid substrates using advanced confocal microscopy. Through targeted genetic engineering and fluorescent tagging, the project maps how fungal activity is distributed across and within colonies in space and time, linking spatial organization to functional outputs to reveal how ‘division of labour’ emerges in filamentous fungi under solid-state conditions. The position is embedded in the Fermentation Cultures group at DTU BRIGHT, offering substantial collaboration and networking across the mission and its partners.

Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- You hold a PhD degree or equivalent and possess hands-on experience in confocal microscopy, ideally working with fungi.
- You have a demonstrated interest in fungal biology and ecology, along with strong English written and oral communication skills.
- You want to participate in a structured 2-year academic research project focused on advanced imaging platforms and solid-state fermentations.
- You thrive in an international, collaborative research environment dedicated to academic excellence.
What should you think carefully about?
- The position is a fixed 2-year commitment based on-site at DTU in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark, requiring relocation if you reside elsewhere.
- Open-source background checks may apply due to research involving critical technology subject to export control rules.
- Exact salary amounts are determined through the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations collective agreement and negotiable supplements, requiring you to verify final financial terms directly.
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This two-year postdoctoral fellowship is ideal if you are looking to advance your academic career in microbial foods, expand your publication record, and build strong international networks within a specialized fermentation cultures group. It provides a focused environment to develop state-of-the-art imaging workflows and explore spatial organization in filamentous fungi.
Our take
Early-career researchers with a PhD and specific expertise in fungal confocal microscopy should strongly consider this opportunity. Candidates looking for permanent positions or non-lab-based roles may find a two-year on-site appointment less suitable.
