Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Scholars with a deep research interest in historical slavery, serfdom, debt bondage, or other forms of asymmetrical dependency prior to 1900
- Researchers who thrive in interdisciplinary environments and want to collaborate with a dedicated Cluster of Excellence in Germany
- Creative professionals and alternative knowledge producers looking to ground their creative work in deep academic research
What should you think carefully about?
- The fellowship requires physical presence in Bonn, Germany, which will necessitate temporary relocation
- The application requires combining all documents into a single PDF and coordinating external letters of recommendation to be sent directly by referees before the strict deadline
- The research proposal must strictly align with one or two of the BCDSS's five specific Research Areas and focus on pre-1900 history
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This opportunity is an excellent fit for doctoral students looking to finalize their dissertations, early-career or senior academics seeking dedicated research time and funding, and non-academic creative professionals aiming to expand their portfolio with historically informed dependency studies. It offers robust financial support, dedicated workspace, and networking opportunities within a highly specialized research cluster.
Our take
Excellent candidates with a strong background in historical dependency studies, humanities, or social sciences should seriously consider applying. It is less suitable for researchers whose work focuses primarily on post-1900 contexts or those unable to relocate to Bonn for the duration of the fellowship.
