Our Take on This Opportunity
This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.
You may be a strong fit if…
- Graduate students who are deeply committed to applied environmental problem-solving rather than purely theoretical academic research
- Applicants who can clearly articulate how their environmental work directly impacts and benefits human communities, particularly marginalized groups
- Individuals with professional or community-based work experience between their undergraduate and graduate studies
What should you think carefully about?
- Requires mandatory attendance at two multi-day, in-person retreats in September and April, which may require travel and time away from academic schedules
- Strictly excludes international students, as eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, DACA recipients, refugees, and asylees
- Students enrolled in online-only graduate programs or those who will graduate before the end of the 2027-2028 academic year are ineligible
How could this fit your current goals and plans?
This fellowship is an exceptional fit for graduate students aiming to bridge academic research with real-world environmental advocacy, policy, or science. It provides not only immediate financial support but also lifelong career coaching, exclusive post-fellowship grants, and access to a highly collaborative network of over 800 environmental leaders.
Our take
U.S.-based Master's and Ph.D. students with a strong commitment to equity-centered environmental leadership should seriously consider applying. It is less suitable for international students, those in online-only programs, or students pursuing purely academic, non-applied research without a clear community impact.
