Our Take on This Opportunity

This section reflects Open Opportunities’ own analysis of the opportunity from an applicant’s perspective.

You may be a strong fit if…

  • Professionals with extensive experience in science policy and program management within international or intergovernmental organizations.
  • Experts with a proven track record in resource mobilization and building strategic partnerships in the context of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
  • Leaders who thrive in multicultural environments and possess the diplomatic skills necessary to coordinate between national governments, UN agencies, and regional scientific networks.

What should you think carefully about?

  • This is a high-level international professional role requiring significant prior experience; it is not suitable for early-career researchers.
  • The position requires geographical mobility, which is a standard expectation for UNESCO international staff.
  • Applicants should be prepared for a rigorous selection process that may include multiple assessment stages, such as written tests and panel interviews.

How could this fit your current goals and plans?

This role is an excellent fit for established science policy professionals looking to make a high-impact contribution to sustainable development in the Pacific. It offers a unique opportunity to lead regional scientific initiatives, influence policy at the intergovernmental level, and work within the UN system to address critical issues like climate change and disaster risk reduction.

Our take

This position is ideal for experienced science program managers with a strong background in international development. Candidates with specific experience in the Pacific region or SIDS will be particularly well-positioned for this role. Those without significant international experience or a background in science policy may find this position less suitable.
